Palestine-Israel, The joint struggle persist in spite intensifying repression

As a backlash resulting from the mounting international opposition to Israeli atrocities and the continuation of occupation, the Israeli racism surge in the open. In spite of jail verdicts to Palestinian and Israeli activists the joint struggle even expand. The ongoing struggles in: Araqib, Beit Ommar, BIl'in, Hebron, Hebron southern mountains, Jail Solidarity, Lod, Ma'asara, Nabi Salih, Ni'alin, Sheikh Jarrah, Tel Aviv are just the more visual ones.

Araqib

Already ninth destruction of the village, repression of the villagers and supporting activists intensify... and the struggle continue.

Beit Ommar

The village was invaded During Weekly Demonstration.

During the demonstration against the occupation on Saturday, five Israeli army jeeps invaded the village of Beit Ummar and took violent crowd control measures. The army used rubber-coated steel bullets and tear gas during clashes with youth inside the civilian areas of the village.

BIl'in

About 20 Israelis and a similar number of internationals joined the Palestinian demonstration against the wall and occupation in BIl'in. Following two mega demonstrations, this demonstration was back to the usual size, but the determined demonstrators weren't deterred. Since the stinking water cannon waited for us behind the gate, the demonstrators went to the northern part of the fence and confronted the soldiers behind it. Then the water cannon was moved, and the demonstrators went back to the road leading to the gate where the soldiers had already come in to confront them. After a standoff between the soldiers and the demonstrators at the front, accompanied by gas canisters shot directly at demonstrators who tried to advance from behind to join their comrades at the front, the soldiers shot large quantities of gas that forced the demonstrators to retreat. Then the shabab took over, fighting the stink cannon, gas and rubber bullets with stones... and gradually most of us returned home. Some of us continued to the Sheikh Jarah (where we also met AAtW people who already participated in the Ma'asarh noon demo).

A 13-year-old child was injured along with one Israeli and one Dutch activist. Many were treated for the effects of tear gas inhalation.

11-1-11 - the day Jonathan started his prison term, we had a similar critical mass ride in the center of Tel Aviv . It was the same route we had two years ago when Jonathan was detained and arrested for now. About 100 comrades converged at the city square and joined the ride - a few on foot. We chanted for Jonathan, for Abdallah from Bil'in whose term in the concentration camp was extended till March 2011, against the occupation and against fascism in Israel.

Jail Solidarity

"The final verdict of Abdullah Abu-Rahme, Bil'in, after more than a year in custody, will be announced in the Military Court of Appeals in Ofer [concentration] camp this Tuesday, January 11, at 10AM.

This week the army resumed nighttime raids in Nabi Saleh. During the weekly Friday demonstration, the village was attacked with excessive amounts of live ammunition and tear gas. A curfew was declared prohibiting residents from leaving their homes for a twenty four hour period. Despite the recognition of unarmed demonstrations as a legitimate form of protest by the European countries, Israel is pushing forward with its campaign of harsh military repression.

This past Friday the army was in streets of the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh long before sixty Palestinians along with Israeli and international supporters gathered for the weekly demonstration against the occupation. Early Friday morning, army jeeps were seen driving up and down the streets of the small village informing residents that a curfew would come into effect in the afternoon and anyone on the streets would be a target of arrests or worse. Earlier this week, the army raided Nabi Saleh twice in the middle of the night. This was part of a strategy of repression which has escalated to a fever pitch in recent days.

The village was sealed by the army at all entrances at 09h00. Once the demonstration began marching to the confiscated land of the village at 12h30, the army simply opened fire on the unarmed demonstrators. One activist who was present on the ground said that “from that moment forward there were always 50-60 soldiers in the village; patrolling and taking over houses.”

Throughout the afternoon, soldiers would raid a house, lock themselves inside and the family outside. Anyone that was walking on the street was shot at with live ammunition. Additionally, soldiers used an excessive amount of poisonous tear gas on the village. Repeatedly, soldiers fired the “ringo" which shoots 64 tear gas projectiles in roughly 8 seconds. The ‘ringo effect’ leaves the entire village in a cloud of tear gas. This form of harsh collective punishment has not been used since the time of the building of the Separation Wall in Ni’ilin in 2008/2009

Three minor injuries were reported among protesters in Nabi Saleh on Friday. However, the army claimed that one soldier was hit by a stone while video evidence (embedded below) clearly shows that the soldier simply tripped on the ground while firing live ammunition at demonstrators. No foreign or domestic media were present for the demonstration, leading many protesters to believe that the army escalated its violent campaign of repression precisely because of the media vacuum.

Ni'alin

Villagers conducted the Friday midday prayers at their lands near the wall and were joined by Israeli and international supporters. As soon as people reached the wall, Israeli soldiers fired tear gas and rubber-coated steel bullets at them including shooting grenades directly at demonstrators, in violation of the low.

A 20-year-old local youth was hit in the head with a rubber-coated steel bullet. The young man, who preferred not to be named, was moved to a Ramallah hospital for treatment and released later.

This morning (Sunday) the Shepard hotel in Sheikh Jarrah was demolished as a part of the construction of a new settlement of 31 housing units in the middle of a Palestinian neighborhood.

The Shepard hotel is located on Mount of Olives road, in the north of Sheikh Jarrah to the direction of Mount Scopus.

Lets focus on what the media didn't cover from the demo yesterday in TLV: There was a man arrested for waving a Palestinian flag. Two others for bad behavior... The response to this arrest was: slowing down traffic. At the end of the big demo more than 200 people flanged to the streets and didn't get of the road till the police released the arrestees.

This Friday demonstration was both against the robbery of lands by the separation fence and occupation as well as in commemoration of Jawaher Abu Rahmah murdered the previous Friday demonstration by the Israeli state forces. About 250 Israelis, internationals, and hundreds of Palestinians of the occupied west bank (including women’s organizations) found their way around the roadblocks on the roads leading to bil'in. we joined lot of the women and men of the Bil'in village.

We marched from the center of the village led by feminist and women's organizations.with chants, banners, pictures and placard with a sound system at the head.

When we arrived at the gate of the route of the separation fence people entered it and hung flags on the electronic fence, shook it and few even started to cut it. The state forces under strict instruction not to start the flooding us with tear gas before things start to escalate, responded instead with water cannon which sprayed water flavored with skunk stench. As the range of the spray was too short and could not disperse the whole crowd, and as the shabab started to throw stones, tear gas grenades were thrown and shot at us.

This week the wind was more friendly. It often carried the tear gas cloud away or even towards the soldiers. In addition to the changing wind youth managed to throw tear gas canisters back on soldiers and we were delighted to see them running away time and again. But, gradually the demonstrators dispersed an outsiders traveled home. When the occupation forces crossed the fence to our side - attempting the hasten the dispersing. Palestinian youth threw stones at the soldiers in an effort to stop them, but were forced to retreat. The state forces were blocked about hundred meters from the fence by the shabbab and could not advance towards the village. The yous continued confrontations with Israeli soldiers for the next several hours.

Teams of three ambulances worked hard to tend for the people suffered most from the tear gas.

In southern West Bank at the village of al Ma’ssara, soldiers stopped protesters from leaving the village and reached the lands the army is planning to take for the construction of the wall. Soldiers used tear gas to force people back to the village; many were treated for the effects of tear gas inhalation.

Nabi Saleh

In the village of Nabi Saleh, three civilians were injured one arrested and a home was set of fire by Israeli soldiers. Today’s protest started after the midday prayers. Soldiers attacked the villagers shortly after and fired tear gas also at their homes, during the protest troops arrested one local youth.

Palestine-Israel, The heroic struggle of Bil'in and the IDF murder of a Female demonstrator Jawaher Abu Rahmah

Bilin was cold yesterday. It rained and the wind and damp got to everything. ---- About a thousand of us showed up â Palestinians, Israelis and internationals â to protest the apartheid barrier in the village. The Israeli army knew we were coming so flying checkpoints were thrown up on the main road into town. We swarmed the hills and valleys surrounding Bil'in by the hundreds and managed to join those already in the village. Nearly all of us us hiked around the apartheid abscesses (Road blocks) and made it to the village where I was surprised (not really) to see Salaam Fayyad. I assume he applied in advance for an entry permit ;). --- The march got underway after the Old Guard finished posturing for the cameras. We advanced about fifty or sixty meters when Fayyad abruptly stopped, shook a few hands, and bowed out. I heard a few jokes and snigger's as we marched on.

It wasnât long - less than half the way between the village and the separation fence, before the Jewish Peopleâs Liberation Army began to gas people. Sorry: It wasnât long before the Israeli Defense Forces employed riot dispersal methods.

Small organized groups of protesters then spread along the Wall to try and implement the popular committee's announcement that he last day of the decade will indeed also be the last day of the Wall on Bil'in's land. An overwhelming number of Israeli soldiers and Border Police officers spread along the path of the Wall, but were not able to stop demonstrators equipped with bolt-cutters from breaching through the Wall in three places.

In one place, the protesters actually managed to carry a rather significant chunk of the Wall back to the village.

Sunday, 26/12/2010, in Bilâin, about 100 hundred people, including citizens of Bil'in, International activists from the French group 'Euro Palestine', members of the Popular Committees of Bil'in and Ni'lin, the Popular Resistance Movement of An Nabi Saleh, as well as representatives from the Office of International Relations of the Fatah Movement - Mr. Jamil Barghouti and Mohammad Shannan, participated in the planting of Olive trees on land targeted by Israel for Wall and settlement expansion. The event was organized by the Popular Committee Against the Wall and the village of Bil'in.

At 3:30 pm participants carried olive trees and farming tools in a massive march toward village land that is still threatened to be confiscated. The demonstrators planted olive trees in spite of the strong presence of the Israeli military. When people tried to plant trees close to the wall, Israeli soldiers opened fire and shot dozens of tear gas canisters in the midst of the demonstrators. This led to a violent army confrontation against the demonstrators. Tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets were used in order to intimidate the demonstrators. Several people who suffered from the effects of inhaling tear gas had to be treated in the field.

Political Gathering Held Wednesday in Bilâin

The Popular Committee Against the Wall organized a political gathering this evening in the local Councilâs Hall in Bilâin village. Many foreign solidarity activists attended the meeting, especially from the group 'Euro Palestine', as well as members from several West Bank Popular Committees.

A comrade reported: "The Israelis used two types of gas canisters. The first, which you can see in the videos, is a fist-sized bulbous rubber projectile. It begins to dispense gas in air, causing it to spin wildly and change directions before it hits the ground. Its trajectory is very hard to predict.

The second type of canister is the more deadly kind â the kind that killed Bassem Abu Rahmah in 2009. Itâs also used liberally by the young supremacists in uniform. Yesterday the steel canisters, about fifty percent larger than a neat stack of quarters, were fired directly at protesters. Their trajectory is more or less straight, but they come at you much faster.

And the gas. Well, âtear gasâ is a bad name for it. It feels like a million blue shards of glass tearing at your alveoli and shredding your eyes. You canât see and double over, trying not to breathe. Acid tears are streaming down your face, but the overwhelming sensation is of being bombarded and suffocated. Youâre ensconced in darkness and your thoughts are disrupted â you only want to get away. And every breath tears at your insides; vicious animals live in your lungs. Iâd rather not breathe than take one more anguished, searing, charred breath. Then, you donât have a choice; you canât breathe. Youâre struggling to run and are overcome by dizziness. Other people help you escape.

Only Jawaher Abu Rahmah didnât escape. She protested, dignified and unwavering for hours. She refused to yield and for that she died. She was 36 and was killed for peacefully protesting The Jewish Peopleâs Right to Self-Determination in Palestine. Her body now rests in the cold, red earth they deify.

We exchanged a few words of encouragement before I snapped her picture, when she was still someoneâs mother.

I wish I knew how distressed she was."

Jawaher Abu Rahmah, 36, was evacuated to the Ramallah hospital after inhaling massive amounts of tear-gas towards protesters in Bil'in earlier today. She is currently in critical condition and is not responding to treatment. Another protester required hospitalization after being hit in the face with a tear-gas projectile shot directly at him."

"Doctors at the Ramallah hospital are currently fighting for Jawaher Abu Rahmah's life, after an acute deterioration in her condition this evening. Abu Rahmah suffered from severe asphyxiation during today's demonstration in Bil'in as a result of tear-gas inhalation, and was evacuated to the Ramallah hospital. She is currently diagnosed as suffering from poisoning caused by the active ingredient in the tear-gas, and is not responding to treatment.

Jawaher Abu Rahmah is the sister of Bassem Abu Rahmah, who was shot dead with a high velocity tear-gas projectile during a demonstration in Bil'in on April 17th, 2009."

And she did not make it ;( Jawaher Abu Rahmah died Saturday morning). The Israeli Anarchists Against the Wall were invited to give the last honer to Jawaher Abu Rahmah.

We attended her funeral with all the villagers of Bil'in, and many other activists of all over the west bank.

Saturday evening about five hundreds of us protested on Saturday in from of the Kirya Base (IDF headquarters) in Tel Aviv. A TV channel 10 early evening news program opened with an opening item on Abu Rahma's murder contributed to the big attendance. Eight protestors were arrested, including former Knesset member Mossi Raz (Meretz) as the demonstrators failed to comply with police and few of us even set on the road.

After the arresting of 8 they stopped arresting people for public relation reasons and let us continue the occupation of the road. Some protesters claimed that "even in the heart of Tel Aviv, the Israeli police treats citizens as enemies, crushing their freedom of expression and operating as storm troops of the right extremists."

MEDIA --- Saturday Night --- US ambassador visited --- Anarchists attack US envoy's home --- Police say anarchists rallying in Herzliya over death of Bilin protester threw [used i.s.] tear gas canisters into diplomat's yard; 11 suspects arrested ---- Demonstrations continue following the death of protester Jawaher Abu Rahma during a rally against the West Bank separation fence at Bilin. ---- Eleven anarchists were arrested on Sunday morning [a bit after Saturday midnight] in Herzliya on suspicion of protesting in front of the US ambassador's home and throwing tear gas canisters at his house.

The anarchists arrived at the US diplomat's home overnight carrying posters. Police officials said the suspects were also carrying Palestinian flags, tear gas canisters [used one of course] and spray. According to on-line reports, the anarchists claimed they arrived at Ambassador James Cunningham's house in order to protest against US military aid to Israel, which they claimed was being put to use against Palestinians. --- The anarchists reportedly chanted, "One, two, three, four stop the occupation, stop the war. Five, six, seven, eight end the funding, end the hate." ---- Occurring to suspicion, one of the anarchists threw hand grenades [really used grenades of tear gas] towards the house yard, and then the suspects fled the scene. The patrol police was called over, headed by Superintendent Avi Ohayon, and began combing the area in search of suspects.

All [half] of the suspected were then found and brought in for questioning over at Glilot police station, headed by Chief Superintendent Nimrod Daniel. They were interrogated and later detained for further investigation.

Police officials said the 11 anarchists, one of which is a German citizen, are expected to be brought before the Magistrate's Court in Tel Aviv in order to extend their arrest.

It seems that the media opinions do not treat the murder of Jawaher Abu Rahmah so lightly and the news with denunciation is all over the media.

On the background of increased international pressure, the Israeli oppression of Palestinians increase - both within the 1948 borders and these of 1967 occupation.... and so rise the resistance, including the joint struggle.

Hebron (Al Khalil) Saturday December 25

Israeli soldiers attacked on Saturday evening a nonviolent protest organized by the Youth Coalition Against Settlements in Hebron, in the southern part of the West Bank. Dozens of Israeli and International peace activists participated in the protest.

Palestinians Israelis and foreign activists hold demonstration against the Israeli settlements expansion and demand to open al-Shuhada street closed by Israeli army, in the West Bank city of Hebron, December 25th. Five protesters were arrested Saturday by Israeli army in the protest in Hebron.

At least four Palestinians and three internationals were wounded after being violently assaulted by the army, and three international activists were detained. The Youth Coalition Against Settlements stated that soldiers attacked local protestors, internationals and reporters who arrived to provide media coverage. The protest, held weekly, is conducted by dozens of locals, Israelis and internationals.

This week’s protest was held at the eastern entrance of the Al Shuhada Street, in the Old City. The street was closed by the army several years ago leading to the closure of dozens of Palestinian stores. Only Jewish settlers are allowed to use the street. The protestors carried Palestinian flags and banners calling for ending all sorts of racial discrimination, and demanded Israel to open the street and to stop the frequent attacks carried out by extremist Israeli soldiers and settlers.

As been the case in recent weeks in Nabi Saleh , all entrances to the village were closed from the morning by Israeli forces, attempting to prevent Palestinian, Israeli and international participants from attending. During this initial incursion to the village, an Israeli soldier shot from a close range 12 successive bullets into the chest of a Nabi Saleh youth, who stood by. The youth fell to the ground, and required to be taken to a hospital. He was released the day after.

This Friday demonstration in Nabi Saleh began with a group of about 50 people marching through the village to confront face to face the Israeli army, which blocked the protesters from proceeding towards the village's lands and spring. After chanting for a while in front of the soldiers, the army attacked the protesters who had to make a fast under-fire retreat, while stone throwers ward off the army incursion. Until the evening, the Israeli army kept shooting tear gas canisters and rubber-coated steal bullets, inside the village's populated area, forming an unlawful collective punishment repressive measure. Tear gas canisters were shot directly at the protesters, a dangerous conduct which violates even the army's own regulations. Some army soldiers kept hidden and then ambushed the protesters from the back or the side. As a result, many were shot from close range, including people inside their houses.

4 people were arrested during the day. One of the Israeli arrestees, a cameraman, was released from the Halamish police point. A Palestinian 20 year old youth was taken to Ofer military prison. The two remaining Israeli arrestees were taken to the Russian Compound and unlike the Palestinian youth, will be brought to court on Saturday evening.

The heroic Nebi Salah --- Today two dozen Israelis joined the village people and together we planted olive trees in front of frustrated Israeli troopers who could not shower us with tear gas.

This Saturday Nabi Saleh marked one year anniversary of weekly protests against the creeping annexation of land by the Halamish settlement, the apartheid wall and the Israeli occupation. About 150 residents and supporters of the village marched to the village's lands and planted some 200 trees right before road 465, which a spring and lands of the village are annexed and threatened to be annexed by the settlement even beyond it. The Israeli army spread across the road but kept at bay, preventing the settlers from nearing the works and keeping a close-eye on the workers, so they want cross the road to the other parts of the village's lands. The works ended peacefully and were succeeded by a ceremony in the village, which was attended by many of the village's residents and supporters.

A Chronicle of Political persecution: Fighting the Oppression in Silwan

The weekly demonstration in East Jerusalem will take place in Silwan.

The armed forces announced their intention to employ against Adnan Gheith, a political and community activist and a resident of Silwan the extreme and draconian mean of restricting him from his community, home, family and livelihood for the duration of four months, due to his participation in the democratic protest against the Jewish settlement enterprise in Silwan (see article in Haaretz for further details).

Silwan, Jerusalem (SILWANIC) -- A demonstration was held today in Silwan in protest to the Israeli government’s attempts to exile Palestinians from Jerusalem. The demonstration commenced at 2pm, with a large number of both Palestinian and Israeli activists marching from Wadi Hilweh neighborhood to the threatened el-Bustan protest tent. Army Takes Over Civilian House and Attacks Non-Violent Beit Ummar Demonstration

Roughly forty five protesters, including many Israeli and international supporters marched to the agricultural lands of Beit Ummar, demanding access to their land which has been slowly confiscated by the nearby settlement of Karmei Tzur.

Small victory gained as the soldiers retreated after their repeated assaults with tear gas grenade - some in direct fire, failed to disperse the demonstration.

Two Israelis of the AAtW and one international activist were arrested while the rest of the demonstration was attacked with tear gas and sound bombs. All released within hours.

This Friday in Bil'in the wind kept blowing in all directions, blending exceptional quantities of gas into the demonstrators who were still on their way to the wall's gate, spreading the gas throughout the village's olive groves, spreading it as far as the village's western homes, spreading the demonstrators everywhere - all 20 Israelis, 10 or so internationals, dozens of Palestinians and the host of journalists. A few peaceful demonstrators managed to hold on to their stance at the wall's gate even after the shabab who respond to state violence with stones had been gassed away. Maybe they were held together by the pep rally around the recently released Adeeb Abu Rahmah at the mosque where the demonstrators first gathered.

Dozens of Palestinian, Israeli and international demonstrators gathered in the village of Al-Ma'asara in the West Bank for the weekly Friday demonstration against the separation wall and land confiscations due to nearby settlements. The demonstration was completely nonviolent, but nevertheless the Israeli army dispersed it with force, shooting tear gas and sound grenades. One Israeli demonstrator was arrested in an attempt by the army to quell the protest, despite it being a peaceful demonstration.

Nabi Saleh resident sustained head injury by unlawful direct tear gas canister; Israeli army delayed ambulance both on the way in and out

This Friday Nabi Saleh marked one year anniversary of weekly protests against the creeping annexation of land by the Halamish settlement. As been the case in recent weeks, all entrances to the village were closed by Israeli forces, attempting to prevent Palestinian, Israeli and international participants from attending. This time these army posts were also used to prevent an ambulance evacuate a badly injured resident who suffered an head injury by a tear gas canister direct hit.

The demonstration began with a group of about 40 people marching between the army posts inside the village, towards the village's lands and spring, while Halamish settlers were attending it without army interference. Once the march reached the main road inside the village, Israeli forces attacked it by stun grenades, ordering and pushing back everyone, including journalists. After standing for a while in front of the soldiers the protesters marched back to the village, where the army has already deepened its incursion and clashes erupted. Until the evening, the Israeli army kept shooting tear gas canisters and rubber-coated steal bullets, inside the village's populated area, forming an unlawful collective punishment repressive measure.

Tear gas canisters were shot directly at the protesters, a dangerous conduct which violates even the army's own regulations. One such canister hit a Nabi Saleh resident in the back of the head. The ambulance which was sent was delayed for 10 minutes on the way into the village, and another 5 minutes on the way to the hospital, by the Israeli army. Luckily enough, the injured remained conscience and hospital tests suggested he may be released within 48 hours.

Ni'lin's weekly protest brought together around fifty of the village's residents, with around 15 internationals and Israelis. The protest march reached the wall built on the village's land. protesters chanted slogans, drew graffiti, banged on the closed metal gate demanding to be allowed to get to their land. a few youth threw stones over the wall, and the soldiers fired tear gas canisters. a number of soldiers then crossed the barrier, leading to a swift retreat by protesters. no injuries were recorded.

‎Remembering the First Intifada, International Human Rights Day, and the Imprisonment of Abdallah Abu Rahme. Today, December 10, 2010, Bil'in celebrated International Human Rights Day with a larger than normal demonstration through the village. Hundreds of supporters came from outside Bil'in to support the village's struggle for human rights, to mark the one-year anniversary of Abdallah Abu Rahme's imprisonment, and to commemorate the First Intifada.

The demonstration was immediately fired upon with large amounts of tear gas from soldiers on several sides. The army had entered through the gate and were waiting in advance of the demonstrators. One Palestinian demonstrator was injured from tear gas, dozens suffered tear gas inhalation, and two were arrested – one Palestinian, Abd al-Fattah Burnat and one German citizen. The demonstrators marched with flags from Palestinian movements and sang numerous songs calling for an end to occupation and settlements and Palestinian national unity.

Occupation activist released Adeeb Abu Rahma, after the arrest of an 18-month Ramallah, 12/12/2010 Israeli occupation authorities released on Sunday, from Ofer prison near Ramallah, on the activist against the wall Adeeb Abu Rahma (40 years) from the village of Bil'in. The Court of occupation sentenced Abu Rahma actual imprisonment for a period of 18 months, actually, in addition to 12 months suspended for a period of four years, and a fine of 6 thousand shekels, on charges of incitement and impeding the work of the army of occupation, and participation of peaceful demonstrations against the Wall in Bil'in. The military court in Ofer has sentenced the activist Abu Rahma, on 08/30/2010 sentenced to 12 months in effect, with 12 months suspended for four years with a fine of 6 thousand shekels, but the prosecution has appealed the verdict and added 6 months on it. It is noteworthy that Abu Rahma was arrested on 10.7.2009 during his participation in Bilin weekly.

Before the first heavy rains hit Israel yesterday, thousands people gathered in central ------- Tel Aviv ------ to mark international Human Rights Day. The occasion brought together various Israeli NGO’s and thousands of concerned citizens in the spirit of presenting a face of Israel that supports human rights and progressive values. Placards were carried through the streets supporting gay rights, woman’s rights, African refugees rights and, also, coexistence between Jews and Arabs. Police lined the streets of the demonstration to ensure the safety of the protesters and keep confrontation with the right wing counter protesters at bay (one has to hand it to the right in Israel, a counter protest to human rights?!). If the Tel Aviv Human Rights Day march wanted to have more authenticity in terms of Palestinian/Israeli coexistence, it should have had more connection with the human rights struggle happening simultaneously in the West Bank.

Only 25 kilometers away from this festive scene, Palestinians were holding their weekly protest against the separation wall and for human rights in the village of

------ Ni’ilin-------. The protest began as usual, with a speech about the wall and the pain that it has caused the community. This was followed by midday prayers and finally a protest march to the wall itself. Among the Palestinians were a handful of Israeli supporters from Tel Aviv.

Once at the wall, protesters banged on the gate with stones and sticks. For a second, the banging sounded like the drummers of ----- Sheikh Jarrah, ------ who engage in 'joy resistance’ by drumming and blowing whistles in their weekly demonstration. The army, on the other side of the wall, spoke on bullhorn informing everyone that the area was a closed military zone and we must leave. It seems that everywhere for the army is a closed military zone and one day, perhaps in the near future, I expect to hear the same bullhorn in Jaffa or Jerusalem proclaiming that the entire land of Israel is a closed military zone. A soldier continued on the bullhorn, saying that they are present to protect the wall. The wall has been built for security reasons yet it requires its own security. Just like the settlements have been said to improve Israeli security but in effect drain security resources.

Unlike the police presence in Tel Aviv, the army in Ni’ilin is present to attack, not defend. It is there to crush the spirit of unarmed resistance in the West Bank. It is there to reinforce that Palestinians are a controlled people living under constant Israeli occupation. As Naomi Chazan began her speech in Tel Aviv (I was following the updates on Twitter while tweeting my own), the army began covering the area of the protest with tear gas. Wave after wave of gas covered the area. Soldiers fired canisters directly at protesters. There was no restraint. Israel’s recognition of International Human Rights Day was starting to take full shape.

The protest ended quickly, as it often does these days in N’ilin, and the five Israelis present drove to Nabi Saleh. There was little discussion about Human Rights Day among the Israelis. They were engaged in a struggle for human rights on the ground and clearly did not have the energy/time to formulate cleaver theoretical approaches to the issue or grand visions of the future.

The village of ------ Nabi Saleh ------- was under siege by midday. Just as in the recent weeks, Israelis wanting to join the demonstration had to take an extended hike through the rugged hills of the West Bank in order to reach the village. Once in the village, the unarmed demonstration was being crushed with live bullets, rubber-coated steel bullets and clouds of tear gas.

Just as the rain hit Tel Aviv marking the end of the Human Rights march, Nabi Saleh was being invaded by IDF soldiers firing live bullets in three directions. The small village, perched on a tired hilltop, was covered in tear gas. Due to the lack of wind, the tear gas was not escaping into the air thus the entire village was walking around as if in a drunken haze with tears in their eyes.

The siege of Nabi Saleh continued until sunset when the last IDF jeeps pulled out of the village. As soon as the army left small boys were running around collecting the hundreds of spent tear gas canisters. Watching them scramble to collect them, the absurdity of human rights day in Israel sunk in. As thousands of people held signs in Tel Aviv proclaiming peace and co-existence, roughly ten Israelis made the half an hour drive to Nabi Saleh or Ni’ilin (Bil’in held a demo as well which had a number of Israelis in attendance).

Imagine if that number was not ten but fifty Israelis. If fifty people from the thousands who marched in Tel Aviv had shown up in Nabi Saleh, the reality on the ground would have been different. Even thirty would have had a profound effect on the attitude of the soldiers and on the people of Nabi Saleh who draw profound inspiration from their Israeli and international supporters.

Why is it that thousands of leftist Israelis are able to gather under a public umbrella of human rights, joint struggle and value and not think about venturing into the West Bank to struggle with Palestinians? One path of co-existence lies in these joint actions of solidarity and since Palestinians are not allowed to enter Tel Aviv it is the responsibility of Israelis to go to the West Bank.The disconnection between human rights in Tel Aviv and human rights in the Occupied Territories was on display yesterday. While the march was a necessary competent of creating a new political space in Israel, it should be only one part of a larger platform which includes Palestinians in the Occupied Territories. Perhaps next year, we will see humans rights demonstrations from Nabi Saleh to Tel Aviv with more Israeli and Palestinians in both places.

The First Israeli-Palestinian Anti-Fascist March in Issawiyah

A few hundreds Israelis and Palestinians participated in this event for the first time in this occupied east Jerusalem - Al Kuds neighborhood. The chief slogan was: lift the siege from Issawiyah (a Palestinian neighborhood in the Occupied East Jerusalem, adjacent to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem). For almost a month the village is under the siege; this week two housing structures there were demolished; and most of the drivers were robbed by the Israeli police, when their cars were searched for alleged defects, then almost all the car owners of Issawiyah were fined. My friend received a fine of $333, as one of the mirrors was not firmly fixed. This is a policy of collective punishment of the residents for nonacceptance of the Israeli domination. Apparently, the numbers of cooperating Israelis and Palestinians that we witnessed today could make a decisive breach in the Apartheid policy of the Israeli regime. Yet, as soon as the Jewish demonstrators left the area, the Israeli Occupation Forces vilely entered the neighborhood and began shooting tear gas into the Palestinian youth. This morning, a letter signed by tens of Rabies, was published forbidding people to rent or sell apartments to non-Jews.

We will not stand silent in the face of such racism!!!

Tomorrow, 8.12, we will protest in front of the big synagogue in Jerusalem (King George St.) at 17:00.

Dear friends,

I want to send you a big thank you from the depth of my heart. Your

contributions that are meant to free my father Ibrahim, as well as

Hassan Mousa and Zaydoon Srour have reached me in Ni'lin. With your

generous help I was able to pay the fines necessary to liberate the

leaders of our Committee Against The Wall.

My father, as well as the other two brave men will be free this

Sunday. All of this was only possible because you helped me to free

them. There are many things I want to tell you, so many things that

happened in the past weeks. Please forgive me that I didn't update you

regularly in the past month, but I had reason to believe that it would

risk my father's freedom if I talk about it before he is free or even

before I could pay the fines. I promise to tell you the details once

they come out of the jail and are safe, re-united with us.

In the past days I was a lot in the mountains with time to think. Many

things that were going around in my head. I want to share them with

you.
